40-year-old medical photographer Janet Parker is accidently infected by a mislaid sample of the smallpox virus in University of Birmingham Medical School, Birmingham, West Midlands, United Kingdom.

Parker was placed in quarantaine in the Catherine-de-Barnes Isolation Hospital near Solihull on 20 August and died there on 11 September. Many people had close contact with Parker before she was admitted to hospital, 260 people were being immediately quarantined. Parker became the last person to die of smallpox.
