Cuevas and two other inmates of Huntsville's Walls Unit sparked the nation's longest prison siege by taking 16 hostages on 24 July 24 1974. Accomplices Fred Gomez Carrasco and Rudolfo Dominguez along with hostages Julia Standley and Elizabeth Beseda were killed during a shootout 10 days later.
