Browne later said that she had been charmed by Sutcliffe at first: "We had walked together for almost a mile – for about 30 minutes and I never once felt intimidated or in danger."

1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten is killed in a bomb attack on his Shadow V boat by the IRA at the age of 79 in Mullaghmore, Connacht, Ireland.

The boat was destroyed by the force of the blast and Mountbatten's legs were almost blown off. Mountbatten was pulled alive from the water by nearby fishermen but died from his injuries before being brought to shore. Also aboard the boat were his elder daughter Patricia aka Lady Brabourne, her husband John aka Lord Brabourne, their twin sons Nicholas and Timothy Knatchbull, John's mother Doreen aka Baroness Brabourne and crew member Paul Maxwell. 14-year-old Nicholas and 15-year-old Paul were killed by the blast and the others were seriously injured. 83-year-old Doreen died from her injuries the following day.

Race car driver and TV personality Jessi Jessica M. Combs aka the fastest woman on four wheels dies after crashing a jet-powered high-speed race car at the speed of 841,338 km/ph at the age of 39 in Alvord Desert, Oregon, United States.

Combs was attempting to better her four-wheel land speed record. Combs's car crashed due to "a mechanical failure of the front wheel" which was "most likely caused from striking an object on the desert".
