Đức's act was a protest against against the persecution of Buddhists by South Vietnam's Ngô Đình Diệm administration. "Before closing my eyes and moving towards the vision of the Buddha, I respectfully plead to President Ngô Đình Diệm to take a mind of compassion towards the people of the nation and implement religious equality to maintain the strength of the homeland eternally." (11 June 1963)

Sunday 20th of November 1960 (x) — Writer Norman Mailer stabs his 37-year-old wife Adele with a penknife in the abdomen and back at a party in their apartment. Adele's pericardium was punctured and necessitated emergency surgery. She would not press charges and Mailer later pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of assault and was given a suspended sentence.
