    For years afterward Thoreau could hardly walk the streets of his hometown without hearing the epithet "woods burner."

    Führer and Reichskanzler of Germany Adolf Hitler commits suicide by a shot in the head at the age of 56 in Führerbunker, Berlin, Berlin, Germany.

    SS-Sturmbannführer Otto Günsche entered the study and found the two lifeless bodies on the sofa. Eva Braun was with her legs drawn up to Hitler's left and slumped away from him. Hitler had shot himself with his own Walther PPK 7.65. The gun lay at his feet and Hitler's head was lying on the table in front of him. Blood dripping from Hitler's right temple and chin had made a large stain on the right arm of the sofa and was pooling on the carpet. Braun's body had no visible physical wounds and her face showed how she had died—by cyanide poisoning

    42-year-old Serial killer Arthur John Shawcross aka The Genesee River Killer is paroled and released from prison after serving 14 of a 25-year sentence for the murder of 10-year-old Jack Owen Blake in Watertown on 7 May 1972 in Green Haven Correctional Facility, Route 216, Stormville, New York, United States.

    In March 1988 Shawcross began murdering again, primarily prostitutes in the area, before his capture less than two years later.

    48-year-old Serial killer Ahmad Suradji aka The Sorcerer is arrested after bodies were discovered near his home in Medan, Sumatera Utara, Indonesia.

    Suradji's three wives, who were sisters, were also arrested for assisting in the murders and helping him hide the bodies. In all 42 decomposed bodies of young women were found buried with their heads facing his house.

    Multiple murderer Rodolfo Baiza Hernandez is executed by lethal injection at the age of 52 in Huntsville Prison, 815 12th Street, Huntsville, Texas, United States.

    Hernandez' last meal request was for two double meat cheeseburgers all the way, french fries, three beef skirt tacos, guacamole salad, salt and two fried chicken breasts. Hernandez became the first amputee to die by lethal injection in Huntsville. Hernandez lost his left leg to complications from diabetes and had at one time hoped to be fitted with a prosthetic leg. Medical complications put an end to that possibility and Hernandez was wheeled into the room, denying him a request to be fitted with a prosthetic device so he could walk to his death "like a man".

    Planespotter and journalist Levent Salim Bergkotte stabs to death 37-year-old Alastair Whewell, pilot of the Piper Cherokee PA-28 they were flying, and shuts down the engine of the sports plane to make it crash at the age of 33 in Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina.

    Bergkotte left a farewell letter to his wife in his hotel room.
