35-year-old Serial killer Joel David Rifkin aka The Long Island Ripper is sentenced to 27 1/3 years imprisonment for the murder of 22-year-old Tiffany Bresciani in Mineola, New York, United States.

Rifkin was sentenced to 25 years to life on the murder charge. A 2 1/3 to 7 year sentence was tacked on for reckless endangerment of the police officers Rifkin led on a wild chase before they finally stopped him on a Long Island highway and discovered Bresciani's body in his pickup truck. After his arrest Rifkin stunned police when he admitted strangling 17 other women and dumping their bodies throughout the New York metropolitan area.

26-year-old Mass murderer Tomohiro Katō known for the Akihabara massacre drives a five-ton rented Isuzu Elf truck into a crowd at the crossing of Kanda Myōjin-dōri and Chūō-dōri streets killing three people, then climbs out of the truck and stabbs at least twelve people with a dagger in Tokyo, Akihabara, Kantō, Japan.

A few days after the attack police arrested several people who stated their intention to commit copycat killings elsewhere in Japan.

Child killer Frank Jarvis Atwood is executed by lethal injection at the age of 66 in Arizona State Prison Complex, 1305 E Butte Avenue, Florence, Arizona, United States.

Atwood suffered from a degenerative spinal condition and needed to be pushed in a wheelchair to the execution chamber and propped on a medical pillow during the execution. Atwood helped prison officials find a suitable vein for the IV line that would administer the lethal-injection drugs to end his life.
