Pepitone's head had been bashed 18 times with at least one weapon. He was rushed to Charity Hospital but within two hours he was pronounced dead. Pepitone was the twelfth and last known victim of The Axeman of New Orleans.

The truck overturned and an explosion occurred as villagers attempted to collect the fuel that was spilling from the overturned vehicle. One local resident was smoking a cigarette, a spark from which ignited the fuel. 196 people were injured.
