68-year-old Nancy Ellen Chadwick is beaten to death by murderess Margaret Allen aka Bill in 137 Bacup Road, Rawtenstall, Lancashire, United Kingdom.

Allen confessed the next day "I was in a funny mood and she seemed to get on my nerves. I had one of my funny turns. I had no reason to do it at all. It seemed to come over me. The noise after the first hit seemed to set me off."

Sunday 28th of August 1955

Black Emmett Louis Till aka Bobo lynched for offending white 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant in her family's grocery store four days before at the age of 14 in Money, Mississippi, United States.

Till was abducted and beaten and mutilated before being shot in the head and his body thrown in the Tallahatchie River. Tens of thousands attended Till's funeral or viewed his open casket and images of his mutilated body were published in black-oriented magazines and newspapers. In September 1955 an all-white jury found Carolyn's 24-year-old husband Roy Bryant and his 34-year-old half-brother John William Milam not guilty of Till's kidnapping and murder.

25-year-old Hajna de Kaplany is stabbed and soaked in nitric acid by murderer Geza de Kaplany aka The Acid Doctor in Apartment 30, 1135 Ranchero Way, San Jose, California, United States.

Geza carried out his plan to punish his wife for her supposed infidelity. He tied her to the bed in their apartment, played loud music and disfigured her body with a scalpel. He dabbed a mixture of hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric acid in the cuts, causing her to suffer third degree corrosive burns over most of the front of her body. After three hours he called police and told them that he had wanted to destroy her beauty but not kill her. She recovered enough to give a statement but died on 30 September.

11-year-old Alexander Sasha Chepel is abducted and stabbed to death by serial killer Andrei Chikatilo aka The Rostov Ripper in Voroshilovsky Prospekt, Rostov, Rostov Oblast, Russia.

Chepel's body was found on 2 September in a forest belt on the left bank of the Don.

70 die in three Aermacchi MB-339 PAN jet mid-air collision in United States' Ramstein Air Base, Ramstein, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.

The mid-air collision took place as the two heart-forming groups passed each other and the heart-piercing aircraft hit them. 346 spectators sustained serious injuries in the resulting explosion and fire and hundreds more had minor injuries. The German band Rammstein was named after this catastrophe. The second "M" was added so the name means "Ramming Stone."

Monday 28th of August 1989

10-year-old Alexey Khobotov is stabbed to death by serial killer Andrei Chikatilo aka The Rostov Ripper in Shakhty, Rostov Oblast, Russia.

Khobotov's body was found on 12 December 1990 in the cemetery. Chikatilo buried him in a tomb which he personally dug for himself at the Shakhty city cemetery in 1987 (he said he was plotting suicide). Khobotova's mother Lyudmila went to Rostov stations and electric trains for almost a year, showing everyone a photo of Alexey in the hope that someone saw him. Once in the train she showed the photo to Chikatilo himself. During the investigation she recognized him by the characteristic gesture with which he corrected his glasses.

Pizza delivery man Brian Douglas Wells aka The Human Pizza Delivery Bomb is killed by a time bomb device fastened around his neck by supposed bank robbers at the age of 47 in Peach Street, Erie, Pennsylvania, United States.

Afterwards it turned out Wells was involved in the plot but did not know that his co-conspirators intended to let him die.
