58-year-old 25th President of the United States William McKinley is shot twice in the abdomen with a .32-caliber Iver Johnson revolver by Polish anarchist Leon Czolgosz in Temple of Music, Buffalo, Pan-American Exposition, New York, United States.

McKinley died eight days later on 14 September of gangrene caused by the gunshot wounds. "It was in my heart, there was no escape for me. I could not have conquered it had my life been at stake. There were thousands of people in town on Tuesday. I heard it was President's Day. All those people seemed bowing to the great ruler. I made up my mind to kill that ruler."

28-year-old Spree killer Howard Barton Unruh aka The Walker of Death shoots thirteen people to death in twelve minutes in Camden, New Jersey, United States.

Unruh returned to his apartment and engaged in a standoff. Over 60 police surrounded his home and a shootout ensued, in which he surrendered. The victims were 27-year old John Joseph Pilarchik, 6-year-old Orris Martin Smith, 33-year-old Clark Hoover, 45-year-old James Hutton, 38-year-old Rose Cohen, 63-year-old Minnie Cohen, 39-year-old Maurice J. Cohen, 24-year-old Alvin Day, 2-year-old Thomas Hamilton, 28-year-old Helga Kautzach Zegrino, 37-year-old Helen Wilson, 68-year-old Emma Matlack and 9-year-old John Wilson. Unruh's last public words, made during an interview with a psychologist, were "I'd have killed a thousand if I had enough bullets."

Commander of KZ Jägala Aleksander Laak commits suicide by hanging at the age of 53 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Laak emigrated to Canada after World War II and exposed as living as a naturalized Canadian citizen under the name of Alex Laak. Israeli journalist Michael Elkins claimed that Laak was in fact confronted one day after his wife had left their house to go to the movies by a Jewish Avenger squad that clandestinely murdered Nazis. He was confronted with his crimes and their intended punishment and he accepted their offer of being allowed to commit suicide rather than be killed.

The victims were 40-year-old Heather Alice Bartholomew and her seven children, 19-year-old Neville Kenneth, 17-year-old Christine Heather, 15-year-old Sharon Anne, 13-year-old Helen Joy, 10-year-old Gregory Kym, 7-year-old Roger Clifford and 5-year-old Sandra Jane, and 23-year-old Winnie Mary Keane and her 2-year-old son Daniel Brian Sean.

Siegfried Hausner was an SPK and later RAF member who died due to an explosion at the Stockholm Embassy in 1975. Schleyer was held prisoner in a highrise in Erftstadt near Köln.

Only hours before he was escorted to the electric chair Gaskins tried to commit suicide by slitting his wrists with a razor blade he had swallowed the previous week, then coughed up.
